Ingredients
Scale
- 12 oz pasta (penne or rigatoni works best)
- 1 lb Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casing removed)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh basil, for garnish
Instructions
- Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Remove excess grease if necessary.
- Add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes to blend flavors.
- Reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream. Let it cook for another 2 minutes until the sauce becomes creamy and smooth.
- Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and toss to coat evenly. Stir in the Parmesan cheese until melted.
- Garnish with fresh basil and serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute turkey sausage for a lighter option.
- If you prefer a dairy-free version, use coconut cream instead of heavy cream.
- Add spinach or mushrooms for extra veggies.
