- 12 ounces spaghetti
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes, then add oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, black pepper, and sugar (if needed). Stir well.
- Simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
- Stir in fresh basil and remove from heat.
- Toss the cooked spaghetti with the marinara sauce or serve the sauce on top.
- Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired, and enjoy!
Notes
- You can add sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers for extra flavor.
- For a heartier dish, serve with meatballs or grilled chicken.
